DIY – tone on tone frame wall

Here is a Do-It-Yourself wall project that I thought I would share with you guys. This tone on tone frame wall will have lots of impact on walls located in hallways, staircases and entrances. It is easy to achieve and personalize.

I actually made it in my workshop because I wanted to create a display to showcase our latest products and inspirations. Because it was mounted on a wall located by a window, I did not hesitate to use a rich color, the well-named “flamingo” by Dulux.

I like to mix and match frames of different sizes and shapes. Another fun trick is to integrate objects to add volume to the mural. And the secret to a lively composition is to overflow the frames and vary the media. In addition to or instead of using pictures, you could showcase drawings, papers, or pieces of fabric.
For more inspiration, visit our pinterest board “FRAMES”.

In order to do this project, you will need:
- Paint (for a similar wall, count 1 liter)

– Brushes of different sizes and a paint roller
– Primer to hide any small imperfections
– Frames (here an Ikea frame Söndrum 26x35cm)
- Wooden board (here 40x50cm) and a drawing clip

– A compass for the round poster
– A silicone gun + silicone
– Nails, screws, drill
– A pack of white modeling clay  to make the flowers
– Primer paint to paint the frames and decor items

STEP 1, Prep work
- Protect your floors, baseboards and surrounding walls with a plastic tarp and masking tape.
- Apply primer to damaged areas of the wall if necessary.
- Trace the contour of the frames with a pencil on the wall to make sure your display works well in the space.
- Use a black marker to identify the spots where you will place your nails/screws.
- Shape the flowers (here we made peonies) with the modeling clay  and let them dry for a night.

TIPS: To arrange your display, you can set up all your different elements on the floor and play with different combinations until you find the one that you like best. Another way to do this is to cut out the contours of the frames on kraft paper. You can then tape the different pieces on the wall and switch them around easily!

STEP 2, Painting
- Start by painting the 4 edges of the wall with a paint brush.
- Then you can use the paint roller to fill the inside of the wall (2-3 layers will be necessary).
- Don’t forget to keep marking the spots where you’ll place your nails in between layers of paint so they won’t disappear.
- Paint the frames and decor elements in the same color as the wall.

TIPS: Apply a coat of primer on your frames and decor elements to ensure a better adherence of the paint and long-lasting results.

STEP 3, The assembly
- Create a finishing contrast by adding a glossy and transparent sticker to the background (available in our e-boutique). The contrast with the matte paint will bring light and volume to the wall while the use of tone on tone ensures the homogeneity of the overall look of this display of various shapes, media and finishing touches.
- Now it’s time to raise your hammers, drills and guns and place the different elements on the wall.

TIPS:

- Add a piece of double-sided adhesive tape to the center of the flower and then surround it by a layer of silicone. The tape will maintain the flower on the wall while the silicone dries out, which typically takes a few hours.
– Wait 24 to 48 hours in-between the painting and the installation of the glossy sticker.

STEP 4, Final touches
- Add touches of paint around the nails, screws and the silicone for a cleaner look.
- And for those not afraid to try, make your drawings spill out of their frames by scribbling on the wall!
And there you go ^^
Over to you and don’t forget to send us pictures of your display!

In a fairy mood

To end the week gently, I welcome you into Marguerite&Gribouilli’s enchanted fairy world. You probably already met our first Angels, launched almost seven years ago. It was therefore about time to introduce you to their new siblings. The Angels stickers are a great addition to children’s room. They somehow make the room feel dreamy and cosy.

We have been working in the past weeks on several projects, which is why we have not posted as regularly as we used to. We should be back to our regular rhythm very soon to share with you some new products, DIY tutorials as well as new design ideas.
Have a great week end!

A piece of my home, the entrance

If you live in Hong Kong you will have, in the coming weeks, plenty of time to take care of your indoors. You know it! Rainy season has definitely started.

I took advantage of the bad weather this week-end to redecorate our entrance, a project that has been on the back burner for over two years. In this space, we have been using a set from Ikea’s BESTA collection, which is conveniently modular.  I like the pure lines and the glossy finish of the furniture, which gives it a very smooth look.

With that being said, I still wanted to add to it my own personal touch. And so all of a sudden this long overdue project became in the morning a matter of emergency that had to be finished before the end of the day!

And so a few brush strokes and hammer blows later, we were able to enjoy our new entrance.

Redecorating the space meant adding a splash of color to the walls and the furniture. We first started by painting a large streak on the main wall, a quick and easy task my little assistant helped with.

Then, instead of using regular frames, I attached family photos to a rope and taped some directly to the wall using washi tape. I also hung a large world map canvas from the M&G collection (available here). I like the playfulness this canvas brings to the space.

To add a touch of color both to the walls and the furniture, I used the Gros pois stickers (girl palette). And I customized the furniture doors with stickers from the Plain is boring collection, which will be available soon in our e-shop,  so stay tuned!

The collection comes on wall stickers, posters but also on mugs!
It’s an ideal housewarming gift to indulge for yourself and for others without moderation!
