All about wall paper

brian-mc-ddrawer-wall-paper

Wallpaper was invented in China in the year 105 by Cai Lun. The invention of the first bamboo paper was in order to line wall screens and partitions with delicate drawings similar to those of porcelain.
Introduced in the 15th century in Europe by Dutch travellers, the wallpaper has won the acclaim in France and Great Britain throughout the 18th century.
The wallpaper has allowed the democratisation of wall ornamentation that was previously painted or woven. Its development is inseparable from the evolution of printing techniques, from etching wooden bits (dominoes) to current laser etching technologies.
In recent years, wallpaper has come back in style, many big fashion houses and designers have gotten on the wallpaper train. These designers and fashion houses have delivered us very modern and surprising versions of painted paper.

TOXICITY
I am often asked if it is toxic and adapted to child-friendly spaces. Future mums are sometimes reluctant to use it in the nursery because of the glue that is used beneath wallpaper.
Wallpaper like other products have different ranges and categories, each with their advantages and disadvantages …

- The adhesive used for wallpaper consists of starch and cellulose, it is not is not toxic but there may be chemical additives (for thickening, accelerated drying or preservatives).
Check the components of the products used, there are many of these products on the market. That said, the so-called ‘clean’ glues have a bad reputation of not sticking well …

- The wallpapers that are covered with a vinyl or plastic film are easy to clean and can prevent the proliferation of mites and the growth of mould. However this plastic film can emit dangerous chemical fumes for people who are at risk.
These papers are polluting during the production process and cannot be recycled.

- Non-coated wallpapers are less toxic but must be regularly brushed or vacuumed to prevent mould and house dust mites. You should avoid installing it in a room with humidity or without sunshine. These are recyclable and some are made from recycled paper (partially or completely). They are often more expensive and rarer to find.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Wallpaper doesn’t have any regulations to date, wallpaper eco-label.
Wallpaper is quite a polluting product, it contributes to deforestation, contains chlorine, heavy metals (inks) and rejects during its production, volatile organic compounds.
If you have the desire to preserve the planet and the environment, some manufacturers are now marketing wallpaper containing significant proportions of recycled paper, or made entirely of recycled paper.
These wallpapers can come from fairly managed forests, or made with low power consumption by using recycled paper: The inks are then integrated without solvent and are water based.

Personally, I prefer to use wallpaper in the living and dining room or other public spaces rather than bedrooms. For the latter, I recommend a decor painting and / or stickers (adhesive surface on stickers will always be lesser than the one for wallpaper).

Recently I had the opportunity to create a paper-like product paints for the Petit Bazaar stores. It wasn’t wallpaper, it was a large vinyl sticker poster.
The result is very satisfactory and was a lot cheaper than wallpaper for a small series production. Here is the matte finish but it is also available in glossy finish.

Dear Fall

Fall is really here and we are finally enjoying its cool weather. The air becomes dry and the night regains its silence with all the air conditioning units turned off. A great happiness and probably my favorite season.

Fall also coincides with that time of the year when we suddenly crave change. Change of colors and materials. This year,  I am particularly fond of carmine reds, grey and powder pink. The light pink, although already trendy this past summer, continues to claim the spotlight in fashion and interior design.

Here is a little selection of images that inspire me this year:

Designs for cool kids

P1100539Our little ones are heading back to school and it might just be the perfect time to redecorate their room. Some of you might have already done just that but for those that are still contemplating different options, here are three rooms I designed this summer to help trigger your inspiration.

TITRES-09The first one is my son’s Aydan’s. He is five years old. The background was made with paint and masking tape. It is geometrical and so quite easy to draw and replicate. The stickers are from our dinosaures collection available in our e-shop right here.

The two following rooms were designed based on existing models. It is an ideal option for those wishing to do something special, yet tailor-made for their space and budget! It usually takes us no more than 7 to 10 days to come up with a design plan, which can later be followed by the installation (but not necessarily). We start by discussing the spirit of the room before deciding on the color of the background and selecting the theme of the room. So don’t hesitate to contact us to schedule a house visit, designing kids’ rooms is one of my favorite parts of my job!

TITRES-11For her big brother Aaron, we went with a combination of grey, peacock blue and orange. We added a touch of fun and color to the gray wall using a 2.5 meters long sticker from the “Plain is boring” collection. Different lengths (up to 3 meters) are now available in our boutique to better fit your spaces and furniture.

3 days in Singapore

I just came back from Singapore where I went to visit the Asian edition of Maison & Objets.
It was a very nice trip in the relaxing city of Singapore, strolling aroung and breathing fresh air for 3 days.
I was really impressed by the greenery, even if I was warned, still.. trees make you silent and feel very small!
I didn’t enjoy the fair much, it was small and quite serious… I was hoping to meet more Asian based designers but I guess the booth prices were too high for emerging talents.
However, I truly enjoyed the city and its parks. It’s a very colorful, cosmopolitan and easy going city.

Here are a few pics that will probably inspire me in my futur projects.

More green!

We need more green and the 2015 trends confirm this!
Shelves, trolleys, lighting fixtures, random objects or even bathtubs… To my delight, plants are everywhere.
Plants represent for me an endless source of inspiration and you may find them in my designs. They have the ability to immediately brighten up and bring life to any space.Use them, with excess! It’s never enough.

I have included below a selection of pictures that inspired me. More to be found on our Pinterest board “green”

Gold therapy

During these bleak times, a little color therapy would do us good! Between the Ebola epidemic, the wars, the crashes, invasions, genocides and so on…living in the golden bubble that Hong Kong is , you realize day after day how lucky we are to be in such a safe and stable environment.

So just for a while, just in the time it takes to share with you these few lines, let’s indulge ourselves in the richness ans splendor of gold. In Asia, it is said to be a mineral light, sign of perfection. With its perfect light, gold will thenceforth be used to symbolize perfect beings. Buddha is therefore often covered in gold. Its sight warms the heart and the spirit. We feel secure in a golden environment because it reflects material abundance.

In design, we rarely use gold on its own because it can quickly become oppressive. Ideally, gold is used to add a glow, a sparkle to a space. It generally goes well with all the other colors: I find the association with coral, pink, blue-green or peacock blue very interesting because it gives it a modern twist. Black, brown and white colors will be used for a more classic look.

Here is a little selection from our Pinterest page.

Wishing you a beautiful week

Wall storage

Hello hello!

It has been a while since I have last published an article about my latest inspirations or any post for that matter! The past days have been rather hectic. I have been working on several projects and already making plans for September. It is going to be very special! I will tell you more about it very soon…

Before we dive into today’s inspiration board, a quick feedback on the sale we organized last week. Thank you so much to everybody who made it (or has tried to ^^). We have been able to raise enough funds to finance two large deliveries. I had not organized a sale in a long time and it was so much fun to move out of the e-shop format and get to meet people. You can check out pictures of the day on our Facebook page.

Well, today I want to talk to you about wall storage and how it can be creative and functional at the same time. From a simple shelf to an unusual object, the options are endless.

Here is a little selection that I hope will inspire you:

Creative design is at its best when everyday objects serve other purposes. And that’s how milk crates, pipes and even wire baskets can be used as wall storage. When recycling meets creative design…

Have a great week end!
