This spring I have been invited by Insight, an Interior design school in HK to talk about my work and animate a workshop about paint patinas.
It was a great experience, I really enjoyed sharing my experience with students, which aslo remind me of my years studying interior design in Paris…
I was really impressed by how quickly they picked up the technique and I loved their colour proposals.
Some of them had time to experiment with the copper leaves, thank you Insight School of Design for having me!
Insight is the only Hong Kong institution dedicated exclusively to Interior Design. This focused and specialized approach ensures a very thorough and focused curriculum. All tutors are working professionals from renowned firms so they know what real life requirements are all about.

Michael and his children are sailors at heart! Weekends and school holidays are the opportunities to sail around the Hong Kong archipelago. The kids had gotten a virus when we talked about the theme of their room. But the theme was obvious.
Our idea for the room was one where fish would be flying and whales jumping out of the water.
The decor was mainly painted on, only the smaller elements were stickers. It was extremely fun for me to create this mural, and the kids’ enchanted and happy eyes immediately made me forget about the hard labor of the past two days that I had spent on the ladder ^^
I can’t finish this post without talking about my assistant Thomas, who tried to step into the fresh blue paint many times! What an adorable little creature! If only some of my family members weren’t allergic to cats…
Sometimes a move coincides with a new start in life or a new family reorganization. Separation, a new child; changes in family structures are often delicate and should be treated with the utmost attention.
Your interior design can help you feel better and it is with great interest that I saw this mural project being built.
The first aim of this project was to increase the emphasis on family values such as love and unity. It seemed obvious to me to work the theme of the tree. Through the symbols of strength, roots, solidity or support, the tree is placed in the living room of this family. We have accompanied it with a poem which has been treated with simplicity and copper leaf for a bright and luminous effect.
The installation of the copper leaf was a first for me, but it definitely wasn’t the last! If you’re interested I’ll post a small memo to explain the different steps for installing the metallic leaves.
Apart from the poem, which is a black sticker, this whole wall is made by hand, acrylic paint and copper leaf.
A simple drawing can be the power force behind a whole marketing campaign. For the end of 2015 and Chinese New Year, I have suggested to Petit Bazaar to work with a beautiful leaf pattern. A simple branch can offer a multitude of variations.
- The Christmas catalog: There is a 2016 calendar on the back cover of the catalogs, which are free!
Go pick them up at the shop if it isn’t already done.
- The shop windows This pattern has helped animate the Christmas themed shop windows. We opted for white as it shows better contrast and maximum visibility.

- The lai sees: Chinese New Year was an opportunity to work with patterns with golden colours.
From time to time, it is necessary to complete as well as animate the graphic universe of a brand. It doesn’t necessarily have to be pushed by big financial efforts. A simple drawing and or design can bring a breath of fresh air for the new season.
A few months ago, my fabulous sister in law asked me to make some illustrations for a book project that she was working on.
The book is about Moroccan traditions, 10 novels with 10 illustrations explaining our traditions in this modern world.
Thanks to her amazing energy and will to bring dreams to reality, the book is now published and sold in many libraries in Morrocco.
Here are some snap shots,
The theme of traditions is a fascinating theme to work on, but also quite frightening at first glance. How can I translate this into images? How to not fall into the clichés? How can I keep the ambivalence through illustration in an equal manner? The texts are part of a modern context and it was evident that the drawings and graphics had to transcribe this duality.
Civilizations that are modernizing are gradually losing their traditions. Personally, I wasn’t familiar with a fraction of these traditions. We often think that traditions are archaic, cumbersome and incompatible with modern life. Yet, they are synonymous with life skills and decency. Traditions are gratifying for those who receive them and for those who transmit them. Let’s not forget our traditions because they are our identity, our constitutions and our civilization.
So many new perspectives are now growing in my mind… a wall, a canvas or a book, after all it is always the same special feeling when you see your little scribbles becoming finalized and becoming real products.
I can’t be more grateful and excited, thank you Selma Desmot for making this dream come true, we can’t wait to see your next book projects. This is only the beginning!
